Beans and Rice

Mason went for his 2nd occupation therapy session today.  They had him finding puzzle pieces in a clear box of dry beans.  Last week he was very timid in this process and would only use his finger tips..  This week he was more comfortable and dug through the beans.  When he did so, he would get chills on his arms.  Talk about our brain sending mixed signals to our body...jeez.  He even stuck his feet in them.

Next he was given lumps of shaving cream to play with.  He wanted no part of this what so ever.  When he touched the shaving cream he would whine and become agitated until he was able to wipe it off.  He would never put his hands in the shaving cream...just pretended to mimic the therapist.  He would drive a car through the shaving cream, but again, freaked, when it touched his hands.  There is much more work to be done, but we are starting the process.

I have gone back to feeding him baby food at each meal.  I think it gets on his hands and he quits.  I tell myself he won't go to Kindergarten with his mommy feeding him.  This is just a bump in the road.  The therapist said this is okay for now.  We haven't gotten our game plan down yet.  Just trying to get him desensitized with touching different things.

We will use beans, then rice, to get him comfortable playing with food.  I tried hiding his gummy treats in the beans tonight, but he wouldn't eat them.  There is a disconnection there that we will continue to work on.

Otherwise, he is doing great.  He is an intelligent little boy, maybe too intelligent sometimes.  Last night we celebrated David's birthday with cake.  He acted like he wanted a piece, so I cut him one and gave him a fork (just like his brothers).  He kept trying to feed it to me (positive step)...he would say "Bite?"...then "AHHHH".  You know...like open you mouth and say "Ahhhh".  In therapy he will start feeding Mr. Potato Head, then Mason...all part of the process.

Good night all and keep praying.  We are blessed that we caught this in time....otherwise we would have a neurotic kid on our hands!
