No matter what happens….TRUST GOD

No matter who you are...
No matter how you feel...
No matter what people do...
No matter what happens...
No matter where you are...TRUST GOD!

These were the themes of our VBS (vacation bible school) last week and they could not have come at a more appropriate or God inspired time in our lives.

For the last school year it had become obvious that Logan was struggling with 1st grade.  Yes, he could do the school work, but it took him twice as long.  He would spend an hour each night doing homework.  He was frustrated and would be angry and throw tantrums for no apparent reason.  David stepped in and started helping him with his homework, but he was still unwilling.

In addition, he was having some difficulty with several boys in his class.  In our school boys typically go to TK (transitional kindergarten) which makes them a year older than the average student.  Most of the boys in Logan’s class are turning 8 this year, while he only turned 7.  Also, we don’t grow ‘em big in the Kerstiens family.  Logan is average and Caden and Mason are in the 5th percentile.  So being smaller, younger and less confident were recipes for bullying and feeling inferior.

Finally, Logan has a tendency to daydream (like his mommy) which means he doesn’t always hear the directions his teacher gives or knows what happens in the story she is reading.  This happens in all his classes.   I can relate because I can barely listen to the end of a song before my mind has wondered off to at least two or three things.

So….we have made the decision to allow Logan a “do over”.  He will repeat the 1st grade (we hate the word repeat).  We are hoping this will allow him to be in a class of his peers and reduce his frustration with the class work.  He is talking with a counselor about the tantrums and how to handle anxiety.  Hopefully the counselor will help us see if we need to have him further evaluated for ADD.

These decisions have not been easy.  I have cried lots of tears because I know my boy will go thru pain by the decision we made with his teachers.  We know that this is best for Logan in the long run, which leads me to TRUST GOD.  Tuesday was the day we decided to tell Logan the news.  We explained the basis of our decision with the help of the counselor.  We really thought he would freak out, but he took it amazingly well.  It must have been all the prayers.  We reminded him that “No matter what happens….TRUST GOD”.  The trust God phrase has been shouted no less than 20 times a day at VBS.  Hopefully he will continue to trust that God has a perfect plan for his life and that

No matter who he is...
No matter how he feels...
No matter what people do...
No matter what happens...
No matter where he is...TRUST GOD!
